How to Host Your own Open Garage
We have one rule at open Garage. Smiles are welcome but frowns that can not be turned upside down must be left behind.
Open Garage really is about providing a space that welcomes those you wish to open your door to. Whether that be a garage door, your garden fence, or an entry to your porch. We believe for Open Garage to be successful it must not only reflect you and your personality but something that you truly believe in. The desire to reconnect with neighbours, meet a few strangers and welcome your community.
It doesn’t have to be complex at all. Over time our Open Garage created its own character with our pop up coffee vender, its own stylist and a bunch of regulars that carry baskets filled with baked goods, jams and produce. But this doesn’t mean yours has to or should be the very same. Start small. Tea and cake, (because who doesn’t like cake) and from there, watch the love of Open Garage grow.
SOME IDEAS TO GET YOU STARTED
- A produce swap table: Where visitors can bring any produce, jams etc.
- Kids activity area: colouring pages, DYI crafts, playdough.
- Pop up library or book swap.
- A place to sit (incase you get a few older people come by). Most people will be happy to stand and mingle.
- Table for your cake and enough space for anyone else (if they choose to) bring something.
- Flyer drop in your neighbourhood. Two weeks before we host our Open Garage we do a flyer drop to homes in and around our house. (See example attached)
